The Yamaha R15 is one of the first desirable and affordable sports bikes in India. It has been reported that Yamaha has been working on improving their R15 sports bike model and the speculations are rife that they are packing the new bike with several mechanical upgrades.Yamaha introduced the R15 way back in 2008 for the first time. Since then, the bike has remained one of the hot favourites among the young bike enthusiasts with its sleek package.A Vietnamese site by the name of Motosaigon has reported that the Yamaha R15 V3.0 which has been codenamed as Yamaha BG7,Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales,is expected to feature the 155 cc variable valve timing unit which is also seen on their NVX scooter
Basically it features a new 155.1cc single cylinder, liquid cooled fuel injected unit engine which is paired to a 6-speed gearbox which .churns out 14.8 bhp of power @ 8000 rpm with 14.4 nm of torque @ 6000 rpm. However, the power figures in the V3.0 R15 will be much higher as the current V2.0 model itself produces slightly higher figures.
The R15 is going to feature an advanced version of the VVT which is called Variable valve actuation. This system allows easy shift of intake cam lobes while moving between low engine and high engine revs. This VVA system will be camshaft based and Yamaha will be utilising a SOHC(Single over head cam) instead of DOHC(Doube over head cam) to keep the engine size within the needed confines.
The R15 V3.0 will be built on a steel twin-par frame, with a newly-designed aluminium swingarm. And the distribution of weight on R15 is now 50:50. The R15 V3.0 is fully faired, with a twin-seat setup and with a moderately aggressive riding position. The motorcycle will ride on upside-down telescopic forks up front and a swingarm-mounted monoshock at the rear. With a length, width and height of 1,990mm, 725mm and 1,135mm respectively, the R15 V3.0 is 20mm longer, 55mm wider and 65mm taller than the R15 V2.0.Basically the height of the seas is 15mm more, but wheelbase is 20mm shorter, indicating the possibility of better agility. Impressively, V3.0 is just 1kg heavier than V2.0.R15 will be available in three colour options including Racing Blue, Matte Black and Matte Red.
Yamaha speaks that the bike has become more powerful and sportier in its new avatar. While the R15 V3 is preparing to arrive in Indian market, Yamaha’s Indonesian arm has revealed the bike in flesh already. It is bit difficult to guess the package that will make it to India. But there is an assumption that it would cost more than the current R15 V2.0.(Rs.1,25,669)
